How Long Does a Polygraph Examination Take?

This is one of the first questions we hear when scheduling an appointment. Briefly, the entire session typically lasts between 90 and 180 minutes, and you will receive a signed report within 24–48 hours. However, it’s worth knowing what this time entails, as the longest part is not the measurements themselves.

What Does the Time of the Examination Consist Of?

A professional polygraph examination consists of three stages, and their duration typically looks like this:

• Pre-Test Interview — 45–60 minutes. The most important and longest part. The expert reviews each question, excludes any contraindications, and explains the procedure.
• Measurements — 30–60 minutes. Three to five series of questions with attached sensors.
• Analysis and Report — 24–48 hours. Evaluation of the recording and preparation of the signed document.

Why Is the Pre-Test Interview So Important?

This may come as a surprise, but the quality of the results is mainly determined by the pre-test interview, not the „connection to the machine.” During this stage, the list of questions is created, and any ambiguities are eliminated — hence, there is no rush. Proper preparation for the examination can improve this stage.

What Determines the Length of the Session?

• Number of Issues. One specific issue is a shorter session than multiple separate issues.
• Language of the Examination. Work through a translator prolongs the meeting.
• Condition of the Person Being Examined. Fatigue or strong emotions may require breaks.
• Possible Additional Series. If the recording is unclear, an additional series may be needed — hence, the possibility of an inconclusive result and another attempt.

Can the Examination Be „Accelerated”?

No, it’s not worth it. Shortening the pre-test interview would lower the reliability of the results, and it’s the quality of the results that determines the accuracy of the method — see the article How Accurate Is a Polygraph?. It’s better to reserve a calm 2–3 hours and leave with a clear result.
